A dental emergency is stressful enough without wondering where to turn. At Watauga Family Dentistry, we reserve time in our daily schedule specifically for emergency patients — so you can get seen, diagnosed, and treated quickly, often on the same day you call.

We handle emergencies with the same calm, gentle approach we're known for — no judgment, no lectures, just the care you need to feel better.

If you're unsure whether your situation counts as an emergency, call us first. We'll ask a few questions, give you at-home guidance to manage pain or preserve a damaged tooth, and get you into the chair as fast as possible.

How Emergency Visits Work

Three simple steps from first call to lasting relief.

1

Call Us Immediately

Phone our office and describe what's happening. We'll triage your situation, give at-home guidance, and reserve the next available emergency slot for you.

2

Same-Day Evaluation

You'll be seen quickly. A focused exam — with digital X-rays if needed — pinpoints the issue so we can explain what's going on and your treatment options clearly.

3

Fast, Gentle Treatment

Many emergencies are resolved in the same visit. When follow-up care is needed, we'll stabilize the problem today and schedule you back on priority.

Emergencies We Handle

From sudden pain to sudden trauma, our team is ready.

Severe Toothache

Persistent, throbbing tooth pain often signals infection or nerve involvement. We identify the cause quickly and bring fast relief.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Cracks and chips can expose sensitive inner tooth structure. We repair or restore the tooth before it worsens, often in a single visit.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time matters — a tooth can often be saved if treated within 30 to 60 minutes. Call us immediately and keep the tooth moist until you arrive.

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost restoration leaves the tooth vulnerable to damage and decay. We'll replace or rebuild it quickly to protect your tooth.

Dental Abscess or Infection

An abscess is a serious infection that needs prompt treatment. We drain, treat, and prescribe antibiotics as needed to protect your health.

Dental Trauma & Injury

Sports accidents, falls, or bumps to the mouth can cause serious damage. We assess, stabilize, and treat dental injuries with care and precision.

Before You Get Here

Quick guidance for common emergencies while you're on your way.

If a tooth has been knocked out

Pick it up by the crown (not the root), gently rinse with water, and if possible, place it back in the socket. If that's not possible, keep it in milk or saliva. Call us immediately — time is critical.

For severe tooth pain

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, floss gently to remove any trapped food, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help until you're seen.

For a broken or chipped tooth

Save any tooth fragments. Rinse your mouth and the fragments with warm water. Apply gauze to any bleeding for 10 minutes and use a cold compress on the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling.

For swelling or possible infection

Do not apply heat or aspirin directly to the gum. Use a cold compress on the outside of your face and call us right away — infections can spread quickly and should be treated promptly.

Emergency Dentistry FAQ

A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, bleeding, swelling, trauma to the mouth, or a tooth that has been knocked out, cracked, or broken. Lost fillings or crowns, abscesses, and infections also qualify. If you're in doubt, call us — we'll help you determine whether you need to be seen immediately or can wait until the next available appointment.
Act fast — a tooth has the best chance of being saved within 30 to 60 minutes of being knocked out. Pick it up by the crown (the top, not the root), rinse it gently with water, and if possible, place it back into the socket. If that's not possible, store it in milk or keep it in your cheek until you arrive. Call us immediately so we can prepare for your arrival.
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, gently floss around the tooth to remove trapped food, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help manage discomfort. Avoid applying aspirin directly to the gum, and don't use heat. These steps buy time, but a severe toothache usually signals something that needs professional attention — call us to be seen.
We always recommend calling first so we can triage your situation, make sure a dentist is available, and prepare for your arrival. That said, we do our best to accommodate urgent walk-ins whenever possible. Calling ahead usually gets you seen faster than showing up unannounced.
Most dental insurance plans cover emergency visits and common emergency treatments, though coverage varies. We accept most major plans and will work directly with your provider to maximize your benefits. For patients without insurance, we offer flexible payment options so cost doesn't delay the care you need.
For most dental emergencies, a dentist is the right choice — ERs typically cannot repair teeth, place crowns, or perform root canals, so you'd likely be sent to a dentist anyway. Go to the ER if you have uncontrolled bleeding, a fractured jaw, or swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing. For everything else — toothache, broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, lost restorations — call us first.
